To this day, the “Treuhand” is held responsible for the trauma of the reunification period. The agency was established in 1990 by the government of the GDR to privatise East German publicly owned enterprises. The initial elation quickly evaporated: Job losses, company bankruptcies and the desolation of entire regions still characterize the post-reunification feeling in the East today. Did the Treuhand fail, or was the painful liquidation of the GDR economy unavoidable?

The three-part documentary chronologically shows the development of state security in the GDR. What made the Stasi one of the most successful secret services in the world? What abysses are hidden in the 111 kilometers of files that were saved from destruction after the end of the Stasi? The films tell of known and unknown cases, of show trials and kidnappings, of assassinations and spying – even among friends and lovers.
